Employers look at more than your Resume

If your potential employer looked at your online presence, what would they find?

Someone is looking, scouring the internet looking at your name and it is not who you might think. Those eyes looking at your past or present posts are employer’s present or possible ones. A Microsoft survey of Human Resource managers found that 70 percent of companies have rejected possible job candidates because of verbiage or questionable pictures they found online.

Background check company, Social Intelligence, scans the web for anything an employer asks for going back seven years.  Early this year the Federal Trade Commission decided that companies that research how you spend your personal time on the internet and social sites do not violate your privacy. Social Intelligence is compliant with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, what does that mean for you, the Internet is fair game. [Read more...]

What in the heck is Xeeme.com?

I am currently enrolled in the Social Media Academy Strategist class, one of the on-line platforms we use is Xeeme. I am betting many of you are wondering what it is. Here is a description our instructor Axel Schultze provided.

XeeMe is something where we want to help people in the social web to “organize, grow and monitor” their social presence. But this may be a too high level direction. Down the road we will heavily invest in analytics. We will go beyond the visits and activities but like we concentrate all sites in one place – we will soon concentrate achievements and activity results into one place as well. So that you will see your Klout score next to your EAV share price, and other data. You will see your Foursquare badges next to Klout achievements and other virtual assets. [Read more...]

Facebook Changes

By now everyone that is a Facebook user has noticed the changes and probably even commented on them. It is amazing how the media has picked up the story. Headlines  like “Facebook Users Outraged over New Change” (Fox News), “More sweeping changes expected for Facebook” (CBS News), and “Facebook Changes, Users React, and How to go back to the Old…” (Huffington Post). A social media platform that has over 750 million, are you wondering why would they want to change up the site?

According to Mashable Social Media, Facebook’s goal is not to gain more users, find ways to increase pageviews, or to increase revenue. That will all come later. “Facebook’s goal is to become the social layer that supports, powers and connects every single piece of the web, no matter whom or what it is or where it lives.” Aren’t they worried their users will deflect and start using Google Plus, which opened for public use Wednesday September 21, 2011. The two C’s “Camping and Connected”

I just returned from a camping weekend with a number of my girlfriends. We shared a number of “roll on the ground laughs”, opinions, and insightful observations.

We started planning our trip a few months back. There were nine of us, ages varied with me being the oldest….not sure how in the heck that happened. We shared a variety of professional careers from recently laid off worker, again me what the heck, to Dental Hygenist, to Sales support staff. We made new friends over the weekend which is always a wonderful thing. Through all of this there were two things we each had in common, a Smart phone and a Facebook page. [Read more...]

The English Language and Texting

I was looking at my Facebook wall and my text messages the other day. I wondered what in the heck happened to our English language?  I noticed misspelled words, lack of using capitalization, periods, commas, abbreviations and incorrect usage of words such as there, their and they’re. It had me wondering, is our use of technology affecting our writing ability.

After searching online to see if there were any studies to claim that electronic communication, is ruining our writing skills, I came up with research on text and instant messaging. Kate Ross wrote in BNET in 2007.

“Text and instant messaging are negatively affecting students’ writing quality on a daily basis, as they bring their abbreviated language into the classroom. As a result of their electronic chatting, kids are making countless syntax, subjectverb agreement and spelling mistakes in writing assignments.

The text message writing style aims at getting as much said with as few words as possible. This rushed form of writing neglects to consider the audience or appropriate voice. The shorthand style is not suitable in formal or classroom writing, and the fact that it is becoming students’ primary form of writing is a serious problem.” [Read more...]

Facebook in Assisted Living and Nursing homes?

I like to stay up on the trends with social media. Last night I was doing some research for Hummingbird Social Media, looking at the different types of businesses I would like to have as my clients. Yes, there are times you just need to think outside of your box.

In doing so I started to research assisted living and nursing homes. My mother currently resides in a nursing home, so I started to wonder if there would or should be a social media presence for the home. Googling a number of facilities  and going to their web sites, I found no online voice. What I did find were a number of articles where our elder citizens are up and running on Facebook. Oh No, an upset Facebook Fan.

You have your Facebook page set up, clients are liking your page, and posting comments. Things are looking good, then comes the dreaded upset fan.

In the world of social media that is to be expected, not everyone is going to be happy all of the time, but what do you do when the unhappy happens.  The customer could have a very simple complaint, but he also wants to let everyone else know that he is not happy.

Social Media Examiner posted 7 tips for dealing with that angry customer.

#1 Respond no matter what! Ignoring the person will not make them go away, it could possible do the opposite. [Read more...]

How I choose Hummingbird Social Media for my business name

I have been asked, “How did you choose the name for your business?”, to make a long story, oh yes it would take a couple of pages, when I think of a hummingbird, I think of quickness, fluttering, and yet graceful. Moving from flower to flower to feeder, feeding their appetite, once in a while taking a rest while perching on a branch. So light and tiny. They can flap their wings so fast it appears they are not moving, while starring at you. Suspended in space.

What is social media, quick information hits, going from Twitter, to Facebook, to LinkedIn, filling your appetite and need for information. Then doing the same process over and over again.

The other day I received the most beautiful card from my daughter-in-law Dara, that describes the hummingbird. It reads:

“Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. Like a hummingbird, we aspire to hover and savor each moment as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer and to celebrate the joy of everyday. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation”

Thoughts to ponder this labor day weekend.

Have a safe weekend!

What if history was written in status updates?

Even book writers are having fun with Facebook and the status updates. Think back to the people you read about in history, Beethoven, Elvis, Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinski  or Cleopatra, what do you think their Facebook status and chats would be like?

Comedians Travis Harmon and Jonathan Shockley have written a short, 140 pages,  fictional humor book, There Be Facebook: Status Updates From God, Gaga, And Everyone In Between, to shed a another light on Facebook. A little bit of slapstick silliness can go a long way these days.

The book release date is November 8, published by Touchstone. Grab a copy and we can share our thoughts.

Make it a great day!
